This book consists of eight chapters, based on the latest information from international manuals from Australia, New Zealand, Spain, the United States, the United Kingdom, and South Africa, among others.

It offers tools for a correct selection, preparation, design and execution of surface treatments. Conceived in a visual, understandable and didactic way, it is aimed at professionals in the sector, students and all those linked to roads or other sectors who want to learn more about this technology.

It includes novel concepts such as emulsions classified by performance (EPG), calculations for the rate of evaporation of emulsions and the degree of drive of the aggregate on a surface.

It presents treatment selection tables according to the demands of traffic and weather, and a design based on the minimum average size (ALD) of the aggregates.

In addition, it teaches test methods for determining fundamental design parameters and provides examples of application rate calculations.

Content

Chapter 1: Evolution of gravel.

Focused on the evolution of materials, equipment and embodiments of surface treatments. It includes history in Uruguay and a current comparison with the situation between our country and one of the leaders in the world in this technology, New Zealand.

Chapter 2: Introduction to the surface treatments.

Although single or double treatments are commonly known, there are a variety of alternatives depending on the application, the expected result and materials used warranting particular names for each technology.

Treatments presented here are mostly taken from the Australian and New Zealand experience. the novel locked multiple treatments are also presented, Bitafal patented technology in the US and Uruguay.

Chapter 3: Materials graveled.

It includes the requirements and demands of aggregates and binders used in surface treatments, detailing quality tests and proposing specifications. This chapter specifically delves into emulsions, their chemistry and their correct use.

Chapter 4: Selecting treatments

The different ways of selecting surface treatments according to traffic, maintenance capacity, road safety criteria, surface condition and climate are presented. It is hoped that the reader can, with the information available, select the best type of treatment, aggregate and binder to achieve the longest useful life.

Chapter 5: Surface preparation.

The lifetime of treatment depends primarily on the quality of the surface on which it is supported. To do this, this chapter delves into the necessary quality of the base and the various previous repairs necessary to apply the treatment. It is including the importance of using stabilized and recycled binders and the synergy achieved with treatments to achieve high-quality pavements.

Chapter 6: Design.

Chapter 7: Building and best practices.

Chapter 7: Building and best practices.

Once the type of treatment and materials have been selected, as well as the surface ready, we proceed to the execution according to the design made. This chapter presents the necessary equipment, the best practices for each stage of the execution of the different treatments, as well as guides for the correct calibration of the equipment.

Chapter 8: Faults and repairs.

As in any activity, there may be premature failure and you must identify them know to solve the detected problem and to prevent it from happening in the future. In this chapter the most common failures of the treatments are presented as well as different alternatives for localized repairs or full width.

updates

Below we show the changes made in each edition. We appreciate that you send errors and comments on improvements to bitafal@bitafal.com.uy to be taken into account in future editions.

edition 2.1

edition 2.1

- Chapter 6.2.1: Change from the rule of eighth to the rule of tenth for the calculation of the emulsion rate in the direct experimental method.

- Chapter 6.2.3.9: At the end of the dosing of the double treatment by Austroads method, a clarification was incorporated for irrigations executed less than 72 hours apart. “It is recommended that the dosage of aggregates and binder of Irrigation A be reduced by 30%. In this way, it is favored that both risks generate better interlocking ”.

- Chapter 8.3: In stone loss faults, the detachment of aggregate B is incorporated in double treatments.
