Warm mixtures with modified asphalt AM3 and AM2 Max show important technical and environmental benefits

Two new test sections using AM3 Max and AM2 Max modified asphalt were carried out during the month of December showing excellent results.

On the one hand, a stretch of rolling folder was made with modified AM3 Max asphalt in the F10 discontinuous mixture that is being applied in the duplication of Route 9 by the Traxpalco company. The results were a temperature decrease of 40 ° C with an important savings of fuel oil, reduction of fumes and gases in more than 10 times and a compaction just like in the hot mixture.

With AM2 Max modified asphalt, more than 500 mixture ton were made in the folder applied in the construction of Route 6 by the CVC company with equally encouraging results. A 40 ° C reduction, improvements in air quality and safety for operators and better densification of the mixture as main results obtained.

The benefits are more than proven in the various trial sections carried out in our country. More works are approaching in the coming months confirming that this technology is beginning to consolidate in Uruguay.

New Road Pliego

New Road Pliego

5 chapters that review much of road construction techniques in our country are already available.

On December 9, the Minister of the Minister, José Luis Falero, and the Director of Roads, Hernán Ciganda, the new sections of the statement of roads that have been updated:

Section 4 - Asphalt risks
Section 5 - Asphalt treatments
Section 6 - Folders and hot asphalt mixtures
Section 7 - Activities prior to flexible pavement rehabilitation
Section 8 - Concrete pavements

Within the framework of an institutional strengthening process in which the National Road Directorate has been working together with the IDB, the update of the specifications for the construction of bridges and roads was updated, a document dating from 1989, regulated the following year in Decree Nº9/990, and modified in the years 2001 and 2003.

All this documentation determines the technical specifications that govern all the works of the DNV and includes: the project, the construction and maintenance of the works, and the materials to be used.

The update was carried out with the support of specialist consultants in each thematic area, who evaluated and analyzed the proposals to advise the DNV on the elaboration of the specifications. The documents were prepared section by section according to the area, and the drafts were made available to the different actors in the road sector, to receive suggestions or modification proposals.

New biomass boiler transforms the energy matrix of our asphalt production.

Our Route 8 plant will soon have a change in its energy matrix, which will put the avant -garde in the production of sustainable asphalt. The new biomass boiler is already in the test stage, and its incorporation into the production line will generate great benefits for the company and the environment.

The new energy generation process based on biomass will allow us to practically eliminate the use of fossil fuels in the plant, which represents a great saving of resources and an environmentally sustainable solution by valuing the containers that are generated in our production line.

This innovation in our production process adds to other measures aimed at reducing the environmental impact and incorporating the concepts of sustainability to asphalt production.

WE CELEBRATE TOGETHER!!!

2024, Your Route is My Route.

The year that ends was not just another in BITAFAL. A year full of challenges, participation in major road works, innovations and projects for the future. It was also a year of participation in the academic world, action in the community and a strong commitment to sustainability.

For all these reasons, we decided to close the year as we started it: all together, happy for what we experienced and excited about what is to come. To celebrate, we organized a party with our entire team, which we called Your Route is My Route

A party that made us go through all the climates: joy, reflection, gifts and a lot of emotion. And like any gathering of friends, music and fun were present with the band Vi-Em live.

Do you want to experience the party like us? Look!

First International Meeting of the CAS BITAFAL – UM

Since its creation, the BITAFAL – UM Sustainable Asphalt Chair has been developing various activities to disseminate advances in technological innovations and products, pointing towards sustainable road construction.

In this sense, in November we organized the first international meeting of the chair called “Warm mixtures: learning for successful management.” The event was held in the halls of the UM Faculty of Engineering and featured a panel of prominent specialists such as engineer Ángel Sampedro from the Alfonso el Sabio University of Spain (UAX), engineer Juliano Gewehr from Ingevity in Brazil, the Argentine global expert Mario Jair and our directors Santiago and Ignacio Kröger.

Before a large gathering of students, Alumni graduates and representatives from other universities, the experts analyzed the results that have been obtained in the countries that are most advanced in the matter, the advantages they present in terms of durability, reduction of impact and costs, and the opportunities for improvement that arise from their analysis with a view to greater use of them in the future.

The meeting was held in person and via streaming, which generated a large audience and laid the foundations to repeat the experience in the coming months.

Try AC30 MAX in El Pinar

In the first days of November, we carried out an important warm mixture application test together with the Municipality of Canelones and the GRINOR company on Aparicio Saravia Street in El Pinar Norte. The test consisted of the application of a mixture with AC30 MAX asphalt, which allowed the mixing, laying and compaction temperature to be reduced by 40°C.

Those responsible for the General Directorate of Works of the Canary Islands were present at the event, who were able to verify the advantages of using this product, which requires less energy for its manufacture, improves the compactability of the mixture and allows rapid release to traffic. and most importantly, it reduces the occupational risks of the team that uses it since there are almost no fumes present and the temperatures are significantly lower.

Our Transformation and Strategy Manager Ignacio Kröger recalled that this application is the first to be carried out at the municipal level throughout the country, pointing out that “we appreciate this Municipality's openness to testing new technologies. We are betting that a standard is generated and that the temperature of all construction sites in Uruguay can be reduced to 40°C, which means reduced emissions, improvements in air quality for workers, etc. “This technology impacts sustainability at all levels.”

Along with the BITAFAL and GRINOR team, students from the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Montevideo were present, who, through the BITAFAL – UM Sustainable Asphalt Chair, are carrying out their final degree project, in an area of great impact on the society such as road construction.

THANK YOU DIEGO!!!

THANK YOU DIEGO!!!

Bitafal will always be your home

This end of the year I had a surprise prepared for all of us who are part of BITAFAL. Our director and founder Diego Kröger has decided to take a break from his path as an entrepreneur.

After more than 40 years of work, where together with his brother Claudio they made BITAFAL a leading company in the road development of Uruguay, Diego decides to give way to the new generations, who continue the path of permanent innovation and sustainability, two pillars fundamental in the past and future of the company.

The good news is that Diego continues his journey, now along the paths of his other great passion: art. As an outstanding plastic artist that he is, he will soon be inaugurating his own painting and sculpture exhibition in Manantiales, which will surely be a must-see on the regional art scene.

For all of us who make BITAFAL, we can only say Thank you Diego, BITAFAL will always be your home!!

VALENCIA HURTS US

VALENCIA HURTS US

Climate change and its impact on roads

The images shocked us all. In a few hours, tragedy took hold of the Valencian community. The formation of an Isolated Depression at High Levels (DANA) generated an unprecedented volume of precipitation, dumping the equivalent of a year's rain on the area in a few hours.

The human toll is the most terrible; More than 200 people lost their lives. The material losses are incalculable at the moment. And the damage to the road infrastructure will require very rapid actions to be able to reestablish circulation in several areas, with highways cut off, highways and roads seriously affected, and an entire mobility network collapsed.

Climate change is a reality that increasingly affects the daily lives of populations in different parts of the planet. The actions taken aimed at sustainability are key to being able to mitigate its impact and begin to generate a new reality, which will undoubtedly take many years to be reflected in a recovery of the environmental quality that we had not long ago.

And what does the road industry have to do in that sense? A lot.

The construction of road infrastructure as a segment within the civil engineering sector has been taking giant steps in the incorporation of techniques and procedures that reduce environmental impact and that can save great costs for governments and the entire planet.

The recycling of asphalt, a material that can be reused infinite times, the reduction of temperatures in the application of asphalt through the use of warm mixtures, the use of modified asphalt that is specially designed to resist extreme temperatures, both cold and hot, The use of water-based asphalt emulsions and the incorporation of waste from other industries that are difficult to recycle, such as rubber or glass, are just some of the measures that can be quickly implemented to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, temperatures used in the production and laying processes and the impact on quarry materials.

National authorities, universities, students and, above all, members of the industry must become aware that what hurts us today in Valencia will surely be a repeated phenomenon in other parts of the planet. And that the decision to change is in our hands.
