SURFACE TREATMENT COURSE WITH THE AUC

SURFACE TREATMENT COURSE WITH THE AUC

The Uruguayan Association of Roads conducted the course on Surface Treatments with 50 professionals from the sector in June and is preparing its repetition for the first days of July.

Last June 14th The Surface Treatments course taught by Ing. Ignacio Kröger was carried out in virtual mode, one of the courses within the Diploma program for Road Works Technician (DTOV) taught by the AUC. On this occasion, specific topics of material selection, design, construction and good practices were discussed, in front of an audience of 50 people, including engineers, assistants, foremen, laboratory workers and students.

The objective of this course, in addition to training in these specific topics, proposes to eliminate several prejudices that still exist at the national level about the efficacy of surface treatments, and to convince that instead of "cheap" and that "they require a lot of maintenance" are the options more cost efficient for road maintenance.

Due to the great interest in this subject, the AUC plans to repeat the course on the day July 5th, also in virtual mode. Registration closes this week and there are limited places. If you are interested in participating, write before Friday to Ana Damonte in secretaria@auc.com.uy

Also at the closing it was carried out by the Qco. Santiago Kröger, Eng. Lucio Cáceres as delegates of the CILA in Uruguay and Eng. Boris Goloubinsteff as President of the AUC and of the Organizing Commission, the invitation to the XXI CILA to be held in Punta del Este in November 2021.
GRUPO BITAFAL'S FIRST CYCLE OF WEBINARS FINISHED WITH GREAT SUCCESS

GRUPO BITAFAL'S FIRST CYCLE OF WEBINARS FINISHED WITH GREAT SUCCESS

During September, October and November, the first cycle of Webinars was held, in which topics related to High-performance Surface Treatments were developed.

Throughout the cycle we delve into the content found in our book that bears this name and what is available to download on our website: https://bitafal.com.uy/libro-tratamientos-superficiales/

The cycle consisted of 3 modules:

MODULE 1: How to guarantee the success of gravel irrigation: materials, selection, design and good construction practices.

MODULE 2: Surface treatments: Performance tests.

MODULE 3: Life cycle analysis of surface treatments: the most efficient option for conservation.

The recordings are already available on our website. They can access them HERE

Thanks to the more than 450 users who followed us throughout the cycle, and to convey to them that this was the beginning of a new modality that we will begin to implement.

As always, we are open to your concerns regarding the topics that are of interest to you so that we can develop in future webinars.

We go for more, we will continue to share paths.

Module 3 - Webinar Surface Treatments

Module 3 - Webinar Surface Treatments

This was the third and last module of the Webinars cycle. In this instance, the theme of Irrigation with gravel was developed: the most efficient option for conservation.

The role of surface treatments in pavement management was studied in depth.
We had the presence of Jorge Prozzi, Professor at the University of Texas at Austin, who told us, among other things, about his research in this area.

Here is the recording and presentation in pdf:

Module 2 - High Performance Surface Treatments Webinar

Module 2 - High Performance Surface Treatments Webinar

This is the second module of the cycle "High performance surface treatments". We will share with you the knowledge and experience that we have collected nationally and internationally on these techniques, complementing what our manual with the same name describes.

In this module we are going to focus on the transformation that the evaluation of surface treatments has had, highlighting the difference between traditional tests and new performance tests. We will talk about laboratory and construction tests that improve the final quality of treatments and new ways to evaluate their long-term behavior.

INDEX:

  1. Performance of a surface treatment
  2. Loss of stone, loss of texture and cracks
  3. Testing of materials, in design and construction
  4. New Zealand experience
  5. Final reflection
  6. Closing

You can access the recording below as well as download the presentation.

SECOND WEBINAR ON PERFORMANCE TESTING

SECOND WEBINAR ON PERFORMANCE TESTING

We continue with the conferences of this first cycle "High Performance Surface Treatments"

Last October 15th The second webinar was held in which we discussed the subject of the tests that are carried out in the stages of selection of materials, design and construction; and we present some of the most effective surface treatment specifications in the world. Once again, we managed to attract more than 350 people in this much-demanded cycle of talks on superficial treatments.

This second conference was focused on the usual performance of a treatment and we reviewed the main failures that can occur, such as loss of stone, exudation and fissures. We comment on how each type of failure is evaluated and its consequences for the user and the Administration. Then, we extensively detail what are the factors that we can control to avoid or mitigate these failures from appearing in the short and long term, both in the selection of materials, in design and in construction.

One of the objectives that we wanted to convey in this webinar was about the importance of tests that allow us to represent a traffic or climate condition to which this treatment will be effectively subjected. Hence the relevance that the new and modern specifications will have for the performance of materials (such as the Emulsion Performance Grade) and the tests that allow, after construction, to evaluate and quantitatively record parameters such as slip resistance and macrotexture. We are convinced that this is the way to go if we want to define failure criteria adjusted to this type of technology, estimate its useful life and therefore use it as an effective tool in road maintenance strategies.

We take this opportunity to invite you to the next Webinar of the day November 6th, in which we will deal precisely with road management and how surface treatments, and in particular gravel irrigation, can be the most cost-efficient solution for their conservation.

BITAFAL GROUP WEBINAR CYCLE

BITAFAL GROUP WEBINAR CYCLE

The first webinar of the High Performance Superficial Treatments Cycle was held.

The first module of this cycle was carried out last Thursday September 24 through the zoom platform with more than 350 subscribers from 26 countries. Relevant topics were discussed to achieve the success of gravel irrigation such as materials, selection of the type of treatment, design and good construction practices.

We are happy to share with all of you this new virtual adventure to exchange knowledge and opinions. The first conference of this first Cycle exceeded our expectations in terms of attendance, adding more than 350 registrations, including technicians, students, officials and builders, demonstrating the growing interest in Latin America for cost-efficient solutions for the road network.

In the presentation by Ing. Ignacio Kröger, some critical points to be taken into account that can improve the quality and favor the success of the application of gravel irrigation were dealt with very concisely. In the area of materials, the importance of granulometry tests, ALD (average minimum size), cleanliness, wear and polishing of aggregates was discussed; and the performance tests of the binders, which are adjusted to the climate and traffic of the project. Some of the tables included in our manual regarding the selection of treatments were also presented and a review of the methodology for using the Australian and New Zealand dosage design was made. Finally, some recommendations were discussed regarding the execution of irrigation, on planning, sweeping, compaction and we showed some examples of proven cases of success in Uruguay.

In module 2, we will focus on the transformation that the evaluation of surface treatments has had (from material control to quality control), marking the difference between traditional tests and new performance tests. We will talk about laboratory and construction tests that allow us to improve the final quality of the treatments and new ways to evaluate their behavior in the long term.
Module 2 will take place on the day October 15th, at 4:00 p.m. (Uruguay GMT -3).
