PERIODIC ROAD CONSERVATION TECHNIQUES COURSE

PERIODIC ROAD CONSERVATION TECHNIQUES COURSE

Bitafal was a keynote speaker in the virtual course of the Ministry of Communications and Transportation (SCT) of Mexico and the Mexican Asphalt Association (AMAAC).

Grupo Bitafal held the inaugural conference of the "Refresher Course in Periodic Road Maintenance Techniques", a Mexican event with more than 500 participants. Below we delve into the content of the course and a free tool for the selection of surface treatments.

Organized by the SCT of Mexico and AMAAC, the course on conservation techniques aimed to update the knowledge of Mexican administration professionals. The event took place over three days, each covering a particular theme. The first day the theme was "Periodic Conservation Techniques" and Bitafal gave the first lecture by Ing. Ignacio Kröger, who dealt with the detection of opportunities and limitations in the evaluation of pavements as well as the correct selection of surface treatments. The first day was completed by important exhibitors, such as Eng. Salvador Fernández Ayala, General Director of Highway Conservation of the SCT and Dr. Adriana Vargas, researcher of the North American National Center for Asphalt Technology (NCAT).

The session on the second day dealt with the theme of "Good practices in conservation treatments" with presentations on gravel, microagglomerates, sealing and caulking of cracks. The presentation by Ing. Jorge Alarcón on his experience in the reuse of milled material (RAP), the different recovery techniques and the configurations of asphalt plants for a greater incorporation of RAP was highlighted on that day.

On the third day, “Asphalt mixes as conservation techniques” were studied in depth, commenting on the good practices of milling, patching and discontinuous mixes. Eng. Francisco Ramos commented on the guide on "Road Conservation Procedures and Techniques" developed by the SCT and detailed the highly recommended "Conservation Treatment Selection Tool" available for free at .

We thank the SCT and AMAAC for the invitation and for having the initiative to share crucial issues for the sustainable development of Latin American roads. Follow us on social networks to find out when the videos of the course are published.

BITAFAL GROUP SAYS PRESENT AT THE 2020 SLURRY SYSTEMS WORKSHOP (# 2020SSWS)

BITAFAL GROUP SAYS PRESENT AT THE 2020 SLURRY SYSTEMS WORKSHOP (# 2020SSWS)

From January 20 to 23, 2020, the largest annual grout and micro-pavement workshop in the United States was held in Las Vegas, organized by the International Slurry Surfacing Association (ISSA). More than 450 professionals and experts from the road sector discussed the importance of surface treatments, their laboratory design, and the best practices for execution and control of works.

Surface treatments in the United States represent only 5% of its road network, but that small number in a country of enormous dimensions allows it to become one of the world leaders in this technology. The # 2020SSWS delves into the use of gravel, micro agglomerates, grouts, crack sealing, Capeseals, ultra fine mixes, etc. and the combination of these to extend the life cycle of the pavements.

The workshop presents the technical knowledge of experts who comment on the details that must be taken into account in the laboratory and on site, with tips for correctly applying the guidelines developed by ISSA (A105 and A143). Among the topics discussed could be highlighted:

- Care and controls in the laboratory to improve the design of micro-agglomerates.

- The physical and chemical foundations of the breaking and curing of special micro emulsions.

- The importance of fissure sealing to extend future treatments.

- Best construction practices for high-quality grouts and micro-agglomerates.

- Use of RAP in preservation techniques, among others.

In addition, the practical application of these foundations was carried out, carrying out small material testing sessions to determine the optimal mixing time in the laboratory and later real test sections with machines and complete work equipment.

Finally the online tool was presented to www.roadresource.org for the correct selection of the type of treatment with calculators to determine life cycle costs, annualized equivalent costs, remaining life and cost benefit. The goal of ISSA with this excellent website is to promote the selection of the right treatment, on the right path, at the right time ("The Right Treatment on the Right Road at the Right Time").

SEMINAR: IMPROVEMENT AND REHABILITATION OF RURAL ROADS

The Ruta 7 Foundation together with the Faculty of Engineering and with the support of the Congress of Mayors and the CURE organized a Seminar on the advances of methodologies and techniques for the improvement and rehabilitation of rural roads on November 17.

It was held at the new headquarters of the CURE (Eastern Regional University Center) in the city of Treinta y Tres and in which various technicians from the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul, the Faculty of Engineering, and Fundación Ruta 7, consultants and Construction Directors of various Departmental Governments.
The topics covered ranged from the design of pavements with low traffic volume, stabilization with hydraulic binders such as lime, ash and Portland cement to the experiences gathered in regional events such as the 1st Argentine Congress of Rural Roads and the Basic Roads Course held in Chile.
More than 60 technicians from Municipalities, Roads, companies and the University participated in the seminar.
At the end of it, an interesting exchange was made between those present on how the stabilization techniques with cement still do not enter the range of possibilities for rural roads despite the incorporation of technology at the national level and how it should be done so that it is done. reality.
