SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS BITAFAL GROUP

SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS BITAFAL GROUP

We work on many of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for a happier and healthier world

The Goals for Sustainable Development (ODS), are the UN's master plan for a happier and healthier world by 2030.
At Grupo Bitafal we ask ourselves: how do we incorporate these objectives into our day to day?
Under the UN initiative "Make change possible" we focus on several of the SDGs to live in a more sustainable way at work and at home, changing consumption patterns, focusing on the use of renewable energy and others. We invite you to learn about our initiatives.
Regarding GOAL 9: INDUSTRY, INNOVATION AND INFRASTRUCTURE, we believe that innovation and technological progress are key to discovering lasting solutions to economic and environmental challenges and that is why we focus on:
  • Implement an Innovation Management System to develop the initiatives we take in an orderly manner.
  • Promote sustainable and long-lasting technologies such as pavement recycling, soil stabilization, high-performance surface treatments, and asphalt mixtures with modified binders.
  • Promote a philosophy of preventive maintenance of pavements using mainly cold techniques.
  • Promote asphalt emulsions as the most user-friendly alternative to the use of asphalt binders.
Regarding GOAL 12: RESPONSIBLE PRODUCTION AND CONSUMPTION we seek to do more and better things with fewer resources, decoupling economic growth from environmental degradation, increasing resource efficiency and promoting sustainable lifestyles. We are proposing a transition towards green economies like the CIRCULAR ECONOMY and with low carbon emissions. For this and linked to the other objectives:
  • We work on the incorporation of recovered waste in paving such as: end-of-life tire dust, crushed glass, steel slag, recycled plastics, recovered hydrocarbons and other large amounts of waste that are a great problem for our society.
  • Study the life cycles of the cold techniques that we promote, seeking to minimize the carbon footprint with different initiatives.
  • We have a total Waste Management looking for alternatives for reuse and recycling.
Regarding GOAL 7: AFFORDABLE AND NON-POLLUTING ENERGY we focus on changing our internal consumption matrix by incorporating clean energy, including renewable sources, energy efficiency and reducing the use of non-renewable fossil fuels. For this we are implementing in our plants:
  • Install photovoltaic solar power generation systems.
  • Implement recovered oils as an alternative fuel to Fuel Oil.
  • Install sensor-based control systems along with frequency inverters, timers, and lighting fixtures to promote energy savings.

All these initiatives are closely related to GOAL 13: ACTION FOR CLIMATE to adopt urgent measures to combat climate change and its effects. With these initiatives we seek to reduce carbon emissions from our operations and supply chains, improving energy efficiency; reducing the carbon footprint of our products, services and processes; and increasing investment in the development of innovative and inclusive low-carbon products and services.

In addition, being part of ASIQUR's Responsible Care of the Environment (PCRMA) Program since 2008, many of these initiatives focused on the environment have been complemented with social ones for several years and therefore under OBJECTIVE 8: DECENT WORK AND ECONOMIC GROWTH, OBJECTIVE 3: HEALTH AND WELL-BEING, OBJECTIVE 4: QUALITY EDUCATION and OBJECTIVE 5: GENDER EQUALITY we have various initiatives such as:
  • Within our company as well as in the neighborhood where we are installed for information, collaboration, training on various topics of interest.
  • We collaborate with gardens, schools, CAIF and other local institutions to improve living and working conditions with financial donations, shelter campaigns, toys, food, among others.
  • We incorporate young students in dual modality, internships, internships and others for their training and work experience.
  • We seek to achieve a work table on the contribution of pavements to road safety.
  • We have strict protocols for the protection of employees and the community against different risks such as chemicals or COVID-19.

We will go deeper into the different initiatives in future editions of our Newsletter to count the progress and spread the enthusiasm for a happier and healthier world.

ASPHALT PG70-28 ROUTE 14

ASPHALT PG70-28 ROUTE 14

Making good progress rebuilding Route 14 through the PPP mechanism by the Consortium Espina-Copasa

The consortium has six work fronts are doing widening platform, recycling with cement existing pavement 20 cm and placing an asphalt mixture with modified bitumen 4 cm.

Asphalt selected by the Consortium is a modified asphalt type PG70-28E supplied Bitafal. It is a AM2 according to IRAM 6596 standard but very close to a AM3. We invite you to know details of progress.

The excellent quality of the cement asphalt type PG70-28E it has been shown in a recent study of different mixtures were made in the 12th Congress of the Road Uruguaya. The same improvement was obtained 3 times in both the resistance to permanent deformation as compared to fatigue over conventional asphalt type AC-30. This classified as asphalt for heavy traffic (Extremely Heavy) AASHTO T350.

We had the opportunity to visit the front CVC work of the company, where they could see the different stages of the reconstruction of Route. A first cleaning stage and widening strip, then the recycling train with portland cement to which was followed by a curing irrigation Emulsion Bitafal Riego 65 and finally applying the front paving asphalt mixture with PG70-28E.

In the other sections we visited this time we see the company Frivial focused on clearing embankments to improve longitudinal profile of the route but turn has a front cleaning, widening and recycling and the company Emilio Diaz Alvarez preparations to start recycling and near the intersection with Route 5. the front paving of this company is doing the stretch peach-Trinidad at a good pace.

We want to highlight the incorporation of technology from different companies, 4 m rules for Pavers, automatic motor grader control systems, oscillating roller compactors, among others, as well as safety and tidiness of the works.

We thank the Consortium and contractors the confidence provided for supplying important input as is the modified asphalt and emulsions both common or modified. We are already preparing to visit the remaining work fronts from the city of Trinidad to Mercedes so keep you posted shortly.

GROUP OF PAVING EXPO BITAFAL PARTICIPATED

GROUP OF PAVING EXPO BITAFAL PARTICIPATED

From day 27 to August 29 was held the Expo & Conference Paving South America, in San Pablo.

Pavement recycling with rejuvenating emulsions, micropavimentos high performance membranes antireflection thin cracks. These are some of the titles of the talks that were presented last August in the Paving Expo&Conference San Pablo, where we had the pleasure to attend.

The note then delves into the most relevant topics of the event that will mark the future of sustainable techniques in our region.

This conference consisted of workshops specific technologies where the field specialists unveiled the latest advances in products and application techniques. During the three days of Congress they were presented about 2300 and about 8800 people attended the various workshops.

Among the most relevant topics, deep recycling with emulsion can be highlighted. This technique, which is becoming more important every day, was explained in detail by experienced professionals, such as Tim O'Connell of Ingevity. Among the benefits that it highlights is first of all the fact that a recycled emulsion base provides superior strength and flexibility that minimizes rutting, fatigue and thermal cracks. Likewise, it is a cost-effective method where all the stone and asphalt material is recovered. For his part, Jorge Escalante from TDM commented on the Peruvian experience with this technique on a high-traffic highway in his country.

30/12/2019

Sustainable techniques mentioned above that in the past were not taken into consideration for technical and economic reasons, they are stomping the region. It was clear from the conference view is set to more sustainable alternatives where bet to improve the bases and very durable thin layers which are applied as rolling.

We thank our friends Betunel e Ingevity for kindly inviting us to the event. For those interested in updating their knowledge on these issues, the next edition will be held in the 1 to 3 September 2020.

RECYCLED CEMENT AND TMT ROUTE 15

RECYCLED CEMENT AND TMT ROUTE 15

Molinsur trust GROUP BITAFAL for the implementation of technical TMT on recycled with cement made in Route 15.

Adjusted dosing and construction conditions, has been developed excellently recycled TMD on cement. The combination of these two techniques provide a unique opportunity to build synergy routes in our country.

Recycling Portland cement is carried out very rapidly on which an emulsion is applied IRRIGATION BITAFLEX 65 P25 with sand as curing irrigation. TMD is then applied with 14 to 19 mm and gravillín stone 2-6 mm with posterior irrigation fog, all run on the same day and with the same emulsion BITAFLEX IRRIGATION 65 P25.

The surface quality of TMT shows great cohesion of the whole package, without loss of aggregates and large voids content serve several functions. For one drain water towards the shoulders reducing the "Spray" effect and leaving a proportion of feasible to be filled by binder and thus prevent any errors dose or overlap that can result in air exudates.

The results are already more than validated on Route 15 in other sections own previously executed. It is expected durability of these jobs that we hope will be adopted by more manufacturers in the short term.

RECYCLED foamed bitumen - ROUTE 102

RECYCLED foamed bitumen - ROUTE 102

The CVC recently started with recycling Route 102 using recycling technology in situ foamed bitumen. Thanks to the high yields of the technique is expected to have completed the tasks leaving a strong and flexible for future interventions take place only in the surface layer basis in about a month.

BITAFAL group HIGH PERFORMANCE EMULSION -BITAFLEX IRRIGATION 65 P40 -

The work consists of milling the previous route, due to the large cracking had the same block, the application of cement, recycled asphalt with added foaming and water, compaction and final grade. Then applying a curing irrigation awaiting a thin asphalt with conventional asphalt.

On the one hand, this intervention makes it clear the maintenance backlog that had this route of great importance for heavy vehicle traffic at the entrances of Montevideo and to the port. We must become conscious that interventions at the right time require less investment in maintenance.

ADVANCES IN SITU RECYCLING ROUTE 39

ADVANCES IN SITU RECYCLING ROUTE 39

Good progress in situ Portland cement Route 39 between San Carlos and recycling Route 8

H & G takes up nearly 50% of in situ cold recycling with Portland cement Route 39 technology being used in many recent projects in the country and with great projection.

Cure for irrigation is being used emulsion diluted BITAFAL IRRIGATION 65 with excellent performance against traffic. The same is exposed for several weeks before the asphalt layer is provided as store tread layer.

The placement of the surface layer is also quite advanced and it is expected that the route is completely renovated in a few months.

SUCCESSFUL APPLICATION RECYCLING ASPHALT WITH FOAM

SUCCESSFUL APPLICATION RECYCLING ASPHALT WITH FOAM

We can proudly say that the Uruguayan road has become unrivaled in the last five years. The design engineers have proposed and accepted new technologies, builders have art equipment incorporating the first world countries and we are encouraging, but we shake the pulse, to innovate.

Who would have thought that in our country the technologies to be introduced as modified asphalts based massively?

Who would have thought that the surface treatments and micros with modified asphalts would apply on routes first order?

Who would have thought it stabilize soils with continuous and mobile equipment was to be imposed so quickly?

Only the technical results obtained are certifying all these advances.

The most recent milestone of new technologies pushed him over the past year the company Hernández and González S.A. making a bet unmatched in his work of Route 3. Sparing no technical or economic efforts, the company conducted a site recycling pavement with asphalt foam backed administration. In last December he was terminated the reference work and drove around in full, being able to observe the same high quality in all its aspects.

an expansion platform a recycling of all of the existing road asphalt foam and asphalt mixture of 5 cm thick, several sections with widening of a third rail verges stabilized in situ with cement and waterproofed with asphaltic treatment was performed modified emulsions.

All this work was done in less than 100 working days. As we all know, when Hernandez is proposed, it does, but beyond personal effort, its staff and technology built in Germany show that can be reconstructed 34 km of a road completely new with a guarantee of over 20 years only 100 working days.

This is the reality we want to emphasize, if we want a Uruguay with very good infrastructure, we must use the best technology, the most productive and advanced end up being the most economical and durable.

This result is part of an innovation process together among the companies that participated in the Wirtgen Technology Days 2014 held in Germany, which agreed to bring in conjunction with H & G, Meliter, CVC and Tradinter a South African technician for the purpose of a conference the virtues of applying technologies foamed bitumen (Bulletin October 2014).

This process continued with the addition of equipment and technologies required for their application and hard work in laboratory design all involved. They were also required many hours of training, briefings and of course hard to successfully implement this advanced technology work in the country.

As anecdotario plus all innovations in this work, conducted jointly develop gravillados hot applied in July, during the winter closed season with a very good technical and result only applied at low temperatures in our country (Bulletin July 2016)

Reflections on state of emergency of national roads

Reflections on state of emergency of national roads

Severe weather in recent months are to be felt in the national roads, from the primary network to rural roads(Source: El País, 04/19/16)

So much so that in several departments requested that the "emergency road" is declared, as indicated in Canelones (Source: El País, 10/04/16)and Salto (Source: El País, 13/04/16) as well as on the coast of the country (Source: El País, 04/20/16) And in the west in Cerro Largo (Source: El País, 05/09/16)

It has been announced by the government a battery of proposals from an extra small party for the Intendencias to cope with the deteriorating state of their ways to the extension of the scheme of PPP (Public Private Partnerships) to rural roads (Source: El Observador, 05/15/16)

He also spoke of a Strategic Plan for Rural Caminería (El País, 05/04/16) But without going into more detail than that is going to make a "Analysis of the needs of each department and introduction of new technologies for road construction".

PROPOSALS

In this aspect, from the Bitafal Group to continue innovating bet in real technical solutions for the durability of rural roads.

1) As We introduced in 2013 technology Soil Stabilization and Pavement Recycling siteToday we remain committed to expanding its use with new binders and execution techniques. We have Foamed asphalts as BITAFLEX AME which can extend the working range during cold periods and give improved performance of mixtures.

2) As ferrous Surface treatments advocates we are, we are developing new asphalts, emulsions and execution techniques to achieve higher durabilities at lower costs. Also looking to expand the range of work during cold seasons.

3) We continue spreading the use of both techniques together. Road engineering worldwide considers that the implementation of these two technologies is the ultimate solution for rural roads and not to mention, because of our scale, which for much of our crumbling road network. What we have learned we must communicate why We participate in conferences and seminars at national and regional level.

4) We continue to learn to apply in UruguayAs we reported in the last edition of "Making Roads" we learn from the Kiwis who have already worked hard to seek durable and economical solutions. One of our technicians will participate in a course Surface Treatment in New Zealand and now we plan to bring South African technicians to continue the dissemination of successful experiences in the world.

5) We continue warning the political actors about the risks of "new" soil stabilization techniques with chemical or biological products. El using these experimental technologies must be done in a progressive manner, and supported on objective, technically sound and consistent, which in one way or another, justify its use. For this test we participate in conjunction with experimental technologies, using the universal recognized technology stabilization Portland cement on a stretch of road in Artigas.
