WITH THE SUPPORT OF BITAFAL, URUGUAYAN ENGINEERS STAND OUT IN THE CILA

The twenty-second edition of the Ibero-Latin American Asphalt Congress was held with great success in Granada, Spain.

An important Uruguayan delegation, made up of engineers from the Ministry of Transportation and Public Works, representatives of the BITAFAL company and other construction companies in Uruguay, met at the largest event of the Ibero-American road industry, having an outstanding participation in the plenary session of the event, with the presentation of research works of high academic level.

The Technical Director of BITAFAL and CILA Delegate in Uruguay, Santiago Kröger, highlighted the quality of the presentations of the Uruguayan technicians, indicating that “we are proud that a delegation of young engineers from our country interact at the level of technicians from the developed world. "This makes us believe that the path that the public sector is taking together with the private company will be reflected in quality public road work that is sustainable and for the benefit of all Uruguayans."

The joint effort of MTOP and BITAFAL allowed 12 engineers from the Ministry to be present at this important event. Throughout the week, they presented their technical works, which in many cases arise from the application of innovative techniques and materials in public works in our country. The initiative had a great impact on the organization of this edition, which is why BITAFAL received recognition for the effort made during the special Congress awards ceremony.

As for the most notable topics discussed, they were innovations in digitalization, use of artificial intelligence and road connectivity, so much so that the Founders Award went to a work on the matter. Uruguay is not far away and presented technological solutions for monitoring road construction and the general condition of routes and highways, through the development of specific applications with these functionalities.

Sustainability remains the most important topic of the Congress with a multitude of technical works on recycling, use of tire dust, warm mixtures and all their combinations as well as environmental statements and calculations on the reduction of the carbon footprint.

Other notable topics are advances in new testing methodologies on asphalt mixtures, the use of waste from other industries, balanced mixture design and self-repair of pavements.

The next edition of CILA will be in Paraguay in November 2025 and an excellent Uruguayan presence is once again predicted, both in quantity and technical quality of its members.

PROTAGONISTS OF THE COUNTRY'S ROAD DEVELOPMENT: NEW PARQUE DEL PLATA INTERCHANGE

One of the most anticipated road works before the start of the season was inaugurated on time.

The access interchange to Parque del Plata, located at kilometer 51 of the Interspa Route, was inaugurated on December 22, providing greater agility and security for those who visit that spa and for the thousands of motorists who travel to and from the East of the Uruguayan coast.

It is a fundamental work within the framework of the M/43 maintenance contract in charge of the Interbalnearia Oeste Consortium and it was a great challenge for the Molinsur company, which carried out the work in record time and to which we thank the trust in the supply of asphalt products. BITAFAL for carrying it out.

The grade-separated interchange, erected on Avenida Argentina, covers an area of 800 meters and is a testament to careful engineering and planning. One of the highlights is the construction of a 97.80 meter long bridge with a clearance of 4.70 meters, in addition to the implementation of a drainage system that includes the installation of 1,400 meters of pipes. The road surface was made with BITAFLEX AM2 modified asphalt provided by BITAFAL, ensuring a long useful life for the infrastructure.
The improvements are not limited only to the road structure, since complementary works have been carried out to guarantee the comfort and safety of pedestrians. The paving of the service roads and the construction of a new pedestrian path are an integral part of this project.

Recycling cement was performed in 25 cm depth giving a great bearing capacity to stretch. irrigation curing is then performed with Emulsion IRRIGATION 65 which allowed the release to traffic during last winter without problems. Bituminous simple treatment was performed on the 9 m wide while the fog twice using only road always Emulsion IRRIGATION 65 P25.

Exudation problems that appeared last year were already controlled in January and hopefully a good pavement performance this season and next summer following. The sealed surface texture was evenly across the entire width making resemblance to a asphalt.

We commend the company for having completed all the sections in very good condition and high quality. It is expected durability and enjoyment for users who can circulate in a safe and comfortable route.

INAUGURATION recoating EN ROUTE 1

INAUGURATION recoating EN ROUTE 1

novel recoating It opened to prevent reflection of concrete joints Route 1 and the new roundabout Playa Pascual.

On June 3 took place in the vicinity of the Playa Pascual new roundabout Route 1 in the opening of the section by Tracoviax between the km 67. Access and attended the same Minister Victor Rossi, the Director of Highways, Leonardo Cola, senior officials of the Municipality of San José, the staff involved in the project and as friends and colleagues at DNV and other construction companies.

The new roundabout built is the largest in the country, with circulation dual carriageway and various security features. In addition to both sides of the road sidewalks for pedestrians, accessibility ramps and bus stops were built. Furthermore, both vertical and horizontal signaling, being provided in the near future replacement of existing lighting redesigned.

As for the retreading of concrete pavement it stands IRI achieved which is below 1.2 m / km. This was achieved by a skate composed of a 6 m long and 3 sonic sensors leveling sensor (BIG-MULTIPLEX-SKY), coupled to the paver and a multilayer system, at various stages retreading as reported in the Bulletin # 94 June 2018. First a sand asphalt SAMI 2, 5 cm, then a leveling layer CAD-12 4 cm type, and finally the surface layer with an open mixture F-10 3cm. modified asphalt was used in all these layers BITAFLEX AM3. We thank the company provided confidence in providing it.

As for the retreading, to improve the IRI on the stretch of Route intervened and asphalt layer to achieve high durability, safety and user comfort slab repair work and potholes then apply three asphalt layers were made:

INAUGURATION OF LOW RIDE IN BUENOS AIRES

INAUGURATION OF LOW RIDE IN BUENOS AIRES

Under the Walk is a 7.1 kilometer road corridor connecting the Illia and Buenos Aires-La Plata highway.

We had the opportunity to tour the recently opened Paseo del Bajo works, construction facilitating cross the city of Buenos Aires in just ten minutes already benefit some 12 thousand vehicles per day, between heavy and light. We invite you to read the note to know the details of the various stages where we were present and see pictures of such a work of engineering.

At the junction of the 25 de Mayo and Ricardo Balbín highways (Buenos Aires-La Plata), this work begins, which, although it had been planned since the 1980s, had never been carried out. The project consisted of about 7,300 meters in total length, in viaduct typologies, level sections, semi-covered trenches and open pit. The work was built in three sections (A, B and C) by 4 construction companies, IECSA, COARCO, GREEN and CEOSA. Section A consists of a viaduct and in particular was divided into two sections: A-South, which connects with the Buenos Aires-La Plata and 25 de Mayo highways, and A-Norte with the Illia highway. Sections B and C are mostly low level. Transversal crossings between Microcentro and Puerto Madero were also installed through several streets, and together with the 60,000 m² of new green spaces of squares and parks, the historical barriers that separated Buenos Aires from the Río de la Plata were eliminated. The terms of the work were 17 months for section A and 28 months for sections B and C, at an approximate cost of US$650 million.

The configuration of the highway is two lanes in each direction of traffic, each lane approximately 11 meters wide, with New Jersey TL5 concrete guardrails. The rolling course in the viaduct sections consisted of a fine leveling layer of asphalt sand with modified asphalt type AM3, about 3 cm, followed by a 7 cm layer of SMA 19. In the low-level sections, a 7 cm layer of conventional asphalt added to another 7 cm of SMA 19. Some 832 beams were placed in the viaduct sections, of which 796 were manufactured in the plant, with a double T section and lengths between 21 and 26 meters, in all alleged cases. Then there were 36 special beams which break down as follows:

- nine beams 36 meters long, 1.90 high and 120 tons, manufactured in situ, post-tensioned and mounted on spans of 36 meters above the Illia highway.

- two beams 42 meters, 1.90 tall, made in situ post-tensioned and mounted on a branch access.

- 25 beams 42 meters, height 2.5, 180 tons of which 6 were manufactured in situ, post-tensioned, and 19 which were prefabricated segments (7 segments per beam) to be assembled and tesaron in the trace. These beams were mounted on the main boards where will the lower rail level.

All the special beams were assembled by means of two frames that ran along tracks perpendicular to the layout. The beams were moved to the assembly site with an innovative traction buggy system, where they were raised and mounted above the spans. Placing the beams for the viaduct presented great challenges. We had the immense pleasure of witnessing the placement of the monumental piece of 42 meters and 180 tons, as can be seen in the photos.

Like any project of this magnitude, the work on Paseo del Bajo had other challenges, which had to be resolved with fair schedules. Among other factors, they had to work in very confined spaces, always allowing (although with difficulties) traffic at all times. In addition, when working in the vicinity of the Río de la Plata, it was also important to take into account the water table when excavating for the trenches, and also to consider sanitation services with large pipes that had to be avoided. Despite these complications, the work was completed in a timely manner, being inaugurated on the 27th of last month.

We congratulate all the professionals responsible for carrying out this magnificent work of engineering and we appreciate the kind invitation to witness a project of this nature.
