Evaluation of penetration of the aggregate in the bases for surface treatments

Evaluation of penetration of the aggregate in the bases for surface treatments

Using the penetrometer ball as quality control element base treatment.

In the path that is being traced at the national level to standardize design criteria for surface treatments, we believe the inclusion of the ball penetrometer test is of utmost importance. It determines if the base is in proper condition to receive initial treatment, or if it requires additional work. It is also an indicator of the degree of compaction that has been achieved and the moisture contained in the base. The test was originally developed by South Africans and is also used in Australia and New Zealand to quantitatively measure the penetration potential of aggregate into the base.

In the initial treatments (surface treatments on bases), the subsidence of the aggregate on the surface always occurs, to a greater or lesser extent. The degree of penetration will depend on the base material, its humidity, compaction and the traffic to which it will be subjected. Not taking these parameters into account results in exudate in the short term, becoming particularly evident in the tracks. The explanation for this phenomenon is intuitive: the tire pressure sinks the stone into a base that allows it and the voids that correspond to the asphalt and the air (to achieve the macrotexture of the wearing course) are occupied by the material of base, causing the asphalt to surface through the stone, which results in exudation in the tracks.

Another issue to consider is the humidity at the time of the test: if the surface is visibly wet, the penetration gives higher values. We could corroborate this by testing the same surface early in the morning and close to noon. In some cases, the conditions of the base at the time of the test are good, but when a primer is applied, due to capillarity and temperature differences, humidity begins to increase in the first 5 cm, affecting the penetration result.

BITAFAL present in the Circulars Opportunities Program

On Wednesday morning, August 8, 2018 the Teatro La Colmena opened its doors to welcome the fifth, and final, meeting dedicated to BUILDING OPPORTUNITIES PROGRAM CIRCULARES.

This is an initiative coordinated by ANDE and biovalue (together with MIEM, MVOTMA, MGAP, UNIDO, GEF and supported by Transforma Uruguay and ANII) to promote joint actions and thus promote the creation and implementation of sustainable productive projects, the framework of circular economy.

We had the pleasure to share a morning full of information and where BITAFAL presented the progress in the use of modified asphalt powder neumátuco out of use for road construction in Uruguay.

At the beginning the basics and regional and international examples of circular economy by the Coordinator of the Environmental Engineer biovalue María José González were presented. Then the Coordinator of associativity area and Integration of the National Development Agency (ANDE) Economist Paula Cobas presented the convocation of Circulars Opportunities Program.

In the second instance it opened a "Living" questions of the problems and opportunities in the construction sector in the transition to Circulate Economy, moderated by Giselle Della Mea (3 Vectors - Innodriven). With Architect Eduardo Siuciak (FARQ- UdelaR) and Ing. Jorge Pazos, Executive Director of the Construction Chamber of Uruguay.

Finally, a panel of businessmen and entrepreneurs with national and regional experience was convened to make a "double click" with examples of application of circular principles in their respective businesses and areas. The exhibition began with Robert Pacheco (Argentina), founding partner of EWAR, a company that since 2008 began to venture into the production of biosynthetic wood boards. The Qco Santiago Kröger (Uruguay) continued presenting the benefits, development, application and prospects of incorporating disused tire dust into asphalt cement. Next, Eng. Nelson Siqueira Nieto (Brazil) from the company RNV Residuos, presented on recycled aggregates, as a sustainable and cheaper solution than the use of non-recycled aggregates. To close the day, Arch. Eliseo Cabrera presented "La Casa Uruguaya", a winning project of the National Prize for Energy Efficiency - Cat. Buildings 2016.

From BITAFAL Group we appreciate the invitation as exhibitors to count the work we have done after collaborating with the environment and society. We welcome these instances of exchange opportunities to further develop new ways of doing things, with a more systemic vision that includes all parties are generated.

Capeseal technology tendered by MTOP on routes 12 and 108.

Capeseal technology tendered by MTOP on routes 12 and 108.

Capeseal technology takes hold in Uruguay with the first project awarded in this mode by the MTOP.

The company Emilio Alvarez Diaz S.A. it's found rehabbing a stretch of 32 km of Routes 108 and 12 in the Department of Canelones. The work consists of a charge in some areas and then performing a site recycling in 20 cm depth with 3% Portland cement and subsequent Capeseal treatment involving the execution of a simple treatment and bituminous cold microsurfacing above.

In this case the application of simple treatment is performed with emulsion IRRIGATION BITAFAL 65 at between 1.2 and 1.4 L / m2 and a gravel 14-20 mm applied between 13 and 15 L / m2. Once cured, the treatment is swept and the company R & K Engineers applies a cold emulsion microsurfacing BITAFLEX MICRO 62 P25 at a rate of about 14 kg / m2. The aesthetic completion of the work resembles an asphalt binder and provides an excellent Macrotexture giving greater security to the pavement.

There are several sections already implemented this technology as Route 55 or Route 69 successfully suggesting that the development of the same in the coming years will grow. So soon in the coming months the company Served S.A. You will be running a section of Route 60 Route 12 and in the Minas with Capeseal.

We believe that it is essential to make a good stable base for the Capeseal will play as a surface treatment lasting many years both in function and waterproofing in adherence with the tire without losing the aesthetic quality.

The use of modified emulsions for both simple treatment as for microsurfacing use should be binding as the adhesion achieved with much higher aggregate in respect to unmodified emusiones. In turn the selection of aggregates for both treatments should be carefully performed for an appropriate duration.

We hope to inform them about future works Capeseal in the coming months and leave you with some pictures of the work done.

Opening exchanger Route 1

Opening exchanger Route 1

The company Molinsur He opened last March 22 Exchangers Route 1 Camino Camino Cibils and Tomkinson.

The inauguration was attended by the current Minister of Transportation and Public Works, Victor Rossi and his predecessor, Enrique Pintado, as well as other DNV authorities, construction companies and friends. During the ceremony, the great challenges involved in a work of this magnitude and investment, estimated at over $260 million, were highlighted. The highlights were the large volumes of natural material moved to optimize the construction of both interchanges as well as the various inconveniences encountered in the execution of a work with a traffic greater than 12,000 vehicles/day but that has solved an enormous traffic junction that had been generated in recent years due to the proliferation of industrial and logistics projects in the area.

Both works were complemented with signaling equipment and defense commensurate with the level of the route. In turn, the joints lit areas according to the new project with latest equipment.

New equipment cold micro agglomerates in Uruguay

New equipment cold micro agglomerates in Uruguay

Serviam continues to incorporate technology for road maintenance and has incorporated a new team Romanelli UHR 900 E-FLOW for the execution of cold set micro.

In a big bet for the local market, served It includes equipment, capacity and engineering for the development of new technologies paving in our country. The micro-agglomerates involve knowing other dimensions cold asphalt mixtures, emulsions and executing treatments. This development has incorporated new procedures both laboratory and field to try to control as many variables as possible and ensure the quality of work performed.

Our company is proud to have participated in it, trying to solve in the best way the problems that always arise in the application of new technology. We appreciate the confidence provided for the design and supply of the emulsion again BITAFLEX MICRO 62 P25 with which the designs of the micros and subsequent pilot test were performed.

Then we bring some photos of the first tranche executed, about two km long on Route 104, Maldonado. In the same well calibrated equipment, know the best enforcement practices from experts in the matter from Brazil, two types of Micro (one thicker than the other) were tested for their performance in the coming months. We hope to approach them progress of the work done with this technology on Route 60 near the spring.
